Home

A few years ago, as I returned from international travel, the border agent asked me, “Where’s home?”

It was, I thought, a strange question.

In any case, I realized afterwards that perhaps it was about where my heart is, not my address.

And today, as I am flying back after a weeklong conference in San Fransisco, my heart skips a beat as I see my hometown from the sky. I’m returning home.

How lucky we are to have a home. In this moment, I am reminded of the many homeless people I saw in San Francisco. I don’t know what happened in their lives that got them to where they are. But I hope the future holds better things for them.

And that’s my prayer tonight. May everyone have a place to call home. May everyone have someone they love to come back home to. May everyone find happiness.

Amen.
